Furman monitoring Florence; regular schedule expected

Furman University is monitoring the forecast for Hurricane Florence and will provide regular updates at this site about how the storm could impact the university and Greenville area. Currently, Furman is planning to maintain a regular schedule.

Furman and Greenville are outside the designated evacuation zones in South Carolina.

While South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has called for a mandatory evacuation along the state’s coast, Greenville lies outside the designated evacuation zones.

According to the National Weather Service, Florence is currently tracking west-northwest and is expected to make landfall along the North Carolina coast around 2 a.m. Friday.  If the storm continues on this track, it is predicted to have a minimal impact on Greenville (half-inch of rain and winds 8-13 mph).

A change in Florence’s path could affect Furman more directly, so university officials will be in constant communication with the National Weather Service and Greenville County Emergency Management to monitor the storm.

The university realizes that some students may be anxious about families and friends who live in areas that may be directly affected by Florence. Those students may contact the Office of Spiritual Life at 864-294-2133 or the Counseling Center at 864-294-3031 if they need to speak with someone.
