The vehicle Furman University Police Lt. Victor Rivas was driving Friday, Aug. 24 may have been crushed in a head-on collision, but not his will to rebound and his forgiving spirit. As Rivas drove to work on Furman’s freshman move-in day, a driver of a stolen vehicle slammed into Rivas near the intersection of White Horse Road and Farrs Bridge. The driver of the stolen pickup truck fled on foot.

Rivas, who is recovering in the hospital from multiple injuries, spoke to Stefany Bornman of WSPA 7News. Rivas said the driver nearly took his life, but he forgives the man, who is still at large. Rivas is expected to be discharged from the hospital soon, but he will need time to recover completely before returning to campus. Said Rivas, “I miss my students. I love my students.”
