Clint Dempsey announces retirement

Furman alum Clint Dempsey, one of the greatest players in U.S. soccer history, has announced his retirement. The former captain of U.S. Men’s National Team was named the U.S. Soccer Male Athlete of the Year three times and is tied for the most goals scored by an American in international play. His retirement made news around the country, including in Sports Illustrated.

Dempsey was a three-year starter for the Paladins and three-time All-Southern Conference selection, totaling 17 goals and 19 assists for Furman. He guided the Paladins to 19 wins and a NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance in 2002. The New England Revolution selected Dempsey with the eighth overall pick in the first round of the 2004 MLS SuperDraft.
