Furman Theatre Arts announces 2018-19 season

Furman University Theatre Arts has announced its season for the 2018-19 academic year. Season tickets are now available. Individual tickets will be sold two weeks prior to show date.

The lineup includes a student-led production and four other plays. All shows take place in The Playhouse on the Furman campus.

The Season Pass for 2018-19 is $61 for adults; $49 for seniors; and $29 for students.

The productions include:

“Daddy Long Legs”
music and lyrics by Paul Gordon, book by John Caird
Sept. 6-8 at 8 p.m.
Sunday, Sept. 9 at 3 p.m.
Season ticket-holders are admitted free of charge. Otherwise, tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students.

This student-produced play is directed by Furman’s Maegan Azar and features Furman seniors Patrick Fretwell and Anne Morgan. Based on the novel by Jean Webster, the play is described as “a charming, moving tribute to the indomitable spirit of a remarkable young lady.”

“Lobby Hero”
by Kenneth Lonergan
Oct. 10-13 and Oct. 18-20 at 8 p.m.
Sunday, Oct. 14 and Sunday, Oct. 21 at 3 p.m.

Directed by Furman’s Jay Oney, “Lobby Hero” was Tony-nominated for Best Revival of a Play 2018. Time Out calls it “A masterpiece. The best drama, the best comedy, and the best romance of the year, all rolled into one.”

“The Servant of Two Masters”

Dec. 4-8 at 8 p.m.
Sunday, Dec. 9 at 3 p.m.

Guest artist Doug Berky directs this comedy driven by two strong, eternal forces—food and love! Christopher Bayes of Yale School of Drama says, “The audience can expect to have a really great and squirrely time.”

“The Diviners”
by Jim Leonard, Jr.
Feb. 13-16 and Feb. 21-23 at 8 p.m.
Sunday, Feb. 17 and Sunday, Feb. 24 at 3 p.m.

Furman’s Rhett Bryson directs this folkloric fable set in 1930s America. “The playwright’s warmth, humor and love for humanity permeate the drama, and make it both touching and entertaining.” –Variety

“John Proctor is the Villain”

April 9-13 at 8 p.m.
Saturday, April 13 and Sunday, April 14 at 3 p.m.

Furman’s Maegan Azar directs new work that stems from a partnership with New York’s The Farm Theater. American Theatre magazine says, “In a mutually beneficial relationship, playwrights develop new work and students get involved in the process of making a new play.”
