University to hold summer commencement Aug. 11

David H. Bost, professor emeritus of modern languages and literatures at Furman University, will serve as speaker when Furman holds its summer commencement exercises Saturday, Aug. 11 at 4 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium.

The university will award approximately 70 undergraduate and graduate degrees during commencement. Furman President Elizabeth Davis will preside over the ceremony.

Bost, who joined the Furman faculty in 1981, retired this summer as the Carey Shepard Crantford Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures. During his career, he received the Alester G. Furman, Jr. and Janie Earle Furman Award for Meritorious Teaching as well as the James H. Smart Award from the Cothran Center for Vocational Reflection.

In addition to serving as chair of the English department and teaching Spanish language classes, Bost taught courses in Spanish-American literature and directed study-away experiences in five countries.

A graduate of the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, Bost holds M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Vanderbilt University.
