Community service will help a Greer teen pay for college

Hydroponic vegetables growing in greenhouse

Incoming Furman University freshman Abigail Smith is getting a head start on her academic career and helping her community at the same time. Smith, a Greer resident who plans to study biology in the fall, has received a scholarship for her work in hydroponics–the process of growing plants without soil. Smith was named the Rotary Club’s “Service Above Self Scholar” in part for her commitment to help people struggling with food insecurity. The Rotary Club of Greenville awarded her a $5,000 college scholarship grant, renewable every year for up to $20,000. Read more about her story in The Greenville News.
