It will take more than a bad case of road rash and a fractured collar bone to keep Norwich, Vermont native Brendan Rhim off the bike. Bouncing back from injuries suffered in a mid-May race in California, Rhim will compete later this month at the USA Cycling national championships in Tennessee. Rhim, a Furman University senior and three-year member of South Carolina-based Holowesko Citadel professional cycling team, had the team in mind when he made his decision to attend Furman to study health sciences. Speaking to a Valley News reporter, Rhim said, “[It was] a developmental team at the time, so actually it made the most sense to go to a team that is going to focus on developmental riders and not 30-year-olds.”

Off-road, Rhim’s physiological development as a professional cyclist also shows promise after he went through a battery of tests at a Furman lab this year. “We looked at the testing results, and our performance director, Bobby Julich, a former Olympian, basically told me, ‘You are super talented, and based on the numbers, you are capable of riding at the highest level.’ I’d never been told that before in my life,” said Rhim.
