Higher ed in Afghanistan

Kenneth Holland, a 1970 Furman graduate, became president of American University of Afghanistan in June 2017. After playing a significant role in rebuilding higher education in the war-torn nation, he assumed the presidency of the university just one day after a major terror attack in Kabul.

Holland graduated summa cum laude from Furman in 1970 with a degree in political science. He went on to earn a master’s degree in government from the University of Virginia and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He has held a variety of positions in higher education, including the University of Wisconsin–Madison, University of Vermont, University of Memphis, Luther College, Kansas State University and Ball State University.
