WalletHub gauges the eco-friendliness of all 50 states using 23 metrics such as LEED-certified buildings per capita and percentage of renewable energy consumption. The group also talks to university experts about how to build environmental mindfulness across the nation. Furman Assistant Professor of Sustainability Science Karen Allen is among the panelists consulted. She says the single most important thing an individual can do to reduce his or her impact on the environment is to “be open-minded and willing to learn … to be able to see the problem and think creatively about how to fix it.”
