Allison Meier, a contributor for Hyperallergic, caught up with Furman University History professor Carolyn Day about her recently released book Consumptive Chic: A History of Beauty, Fashion, and Disease (Bloomsbury Academic). Homing in on the decades between 1780 and 1850, Day explores the evolution of the scientific understanding of tuberculosis and its odd relationship with fashion and beauty. The New York-based online publication Hyperallergic bills itself as “a forum for playful, serious, and radical perspectives on art and culture in the world today.”
