Jazmin Black Grollemund performs in Faculty Chamber Series Jan. 12

Furman University alumna and soprano Jazmin Black Grollemund will perform Friday, Jan. 12 at 8 p.m. in Daniel Recital Hall on campus.

Her performance is open to the public and is part of the Faculty Chamber Music Series. Tickets for the Sound Quality Concert Series recital are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and $5 for students.

Performing for the first time on campus since her graduation in 2010, Black Grollemund will give the South Carolina premiere of The White Album, a song cycle by Mark Kilstofte, Furman professor of music composition and theory. With its premiere in Houston January 2017, The White Album is a work for voice, flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano and percussion commissioned by the Fromm Music Foundation of Harvard University.

The work features poems that reference the color white and includes the work of American poets Mark Strand, James Merrill, Linda Pastan, Erica Funkhouser and Nancy Willard.

Black Grollemund received degrees in vocal performance and opera at Furman and Maryland Opera Studio. She won first prize at the Aiken Performing Arts Masterclass Competition where she appeared in concert with Frederica von Stade. Black Grollemund garnered top honors when she competed in Vivonne’s international singing competition upon her arrival in France in 2013.

In addition to operatic roles as Mimi in Puccini’s La Bohème and Fiordiligi in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, she has appeared as soloist in Mozart’s Requiem, Brahms’ A German Requiem, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle and Handel’s Messiah. In 2017, she recorded two albums, most notably 22 Verlaine songs set to music by the composer Poldowski with Paris-based Ensemble 1904.
