High Noon on Nov. 1: “Are You Fake News?”

Furman Communication Studies professors John Armstrong and Brandon Inabinet will discuss “fake news” and the new media environment when they speak at the university’s High Noon fall lecture series Wednesday, Nov. 1.

Their talk, “Are You Fake News? Belief, Outrage and Incivility in the New Media Environment,” begins at noon at the Upcountry History Museum-Furman. It is free and open to the public.

Dr. Armstrong, an expert in broadcast communication, will look at examples of “fake news” incidents in early modern media to help contextualize the contemporary problem.

Dr. Inabinet, an expert in political rhetoric, will explain how the persuasive use of these new media tools propelled the rise of right-wing extremism globally and impacted the 2016 Presidential election.

This is the final lecture of the fall series.  The High Noon series will resume in the spring.
