Furman President Elizabeth Davis is among nearly 800 college and university presidents and chancellors who have signed a letter to U.S. Senate and House leaders urging Congress to pass legislation to permanently protect the nation’s Dreamers. The letter, dated Oct. 19, 2017, is posted at the website of the American Council on Education.

The letter asks Congress “to take the action that President Trump requested when he rescinded the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy, and pass a long-term legislative fix as soon as possible to protect Dreamers, outstanding young people brought to our country as children.”

President Davis has signed other letters calling for the President to uphold and continue DACA, and she sent a message to the campus community in September stating, in part: “We are now imploring Congress to find a permanent solution to help the 800,000 ‘Dreamers’ who were brought here as children through no choice of their own. They are now fellow students and co-workers who call this country their home.”
