Oct. 6, 1953 was a special day

In 1947, Furman University trustees were confronted with a downtown campus swollen by veterans’ enrollment, a physical plant with maintenance deferred since the Great Depression, and serious transportation issues in the mile that separated its women’s and men’s campuses. On Oct. 6, 1953, Furman broke ground for a new campus located off Duncan Chapel Road. The Greenville News remembered Furman’s move to its new campus on the 64th anniversary of the groundbreaking.
