Diversity Officer Michael Jennings moderates “What’s in a Name?”
Furman University Chief Diversity Officer Michael Jennings served as moderator for the Sept. 7 community discussion hosted by The Greenville News, “What’s in a Name?” The discussion raised pros and cons of changing the name of local high school, Wade Hampton, which was named for the Confederate lieutenant general and slave holder.
In addition to Jennings as moderator, panelists included Asha Marie, Fine Arts Center and Wade Hampton student who launched a petition to do away with the name, and three Wade Hampton graduates: Rev. Deb Richardson-Moore, pastor of Triune Mercy Center; Lynda Leventis-Wells, school board trustee; and Rev. David Taylor, former student body president at the high school. Paul Hyde of the News covered the event, which drew about 100 community members to Hughes Main Library downtown.
