“Should a modern and well-respected Greenville high school continue to bear the name of a man who was a slaveholder, Confederate lieutenant general and, according to some, a blatant racist?” asks Paul Hyde of The Greenville News. The news organization is hosting a forum, “What’s In a Name?” to discuss that question regarding Wade Hampton High School and other issues surrounding Confederate icons, names and symbols.

The forum will be moderated by Michael E. Jennings, Furman University Chief Diversity Officer. The discussion is free and open to the public and happens Thursday, Sept. 7 at the Hughes Main Library, 25 Heritage Green Place, at 6 p.m. Seating is limited for the event.

Said Angela Tuck, senior engagement editor for the News, “The larger, national debate on statues, Confederate flags, etc., has prompted us to talk more about race relations in America. These are healthy discussions to have, especially in light of what recently took place in Charlottesville, Virginia.”
