Furman University Theatre will present John Patrick Shanley’s Danny and the Deep Blue Sea Friday and Saturday, Sept. 1 and Sept. 2 at 8 p.m., with a Saturday matinee Sept. 2 at 3 p.m. All performances take place in The Playhouse on the Furman University campus.

Directed by guest artist Carol Sutton, the play by the Academy and Tony Award-winning Shanley is open to the public. Tickets for the student-produced event are $5 (cash or check); and admission is free for Furman Theatre Season ticket holders.

Danny and the Deep Blue Sea is described as “An explosive, deeply affecting study of alienation and the redemptive power of love.” It features Furman senior Elli Caterisano as Roberta and Sam Nelson (Class of 2017) as Danny.

Howlround.com says the play “tells the story of two strangers (Danny and Roberta) who, after a hesitant, defensive initial meeting in a Bronx bar, bob and weave in a three-scene-long ‘apache dance’ (a violent dance for two people, according to Shanley’s stage directions) towards forgiveness and ownership over their lives. Danny and Roberta ultimately find they can envision a future together that neither of them could see for themselves.”
