School Tools Turns Seven

School Tools Impact

Seven years ago, Furman University first partnered with the United Way of Greenville County to provide elementary and middle school students with supplies to begin the school year.

Since that time, the university community has supported 770 students through the United Way’s School Tools program. That’s about the size of Furman’s incoming freshman class.

This year, members of the Furman community provided support for 131 students compared to 70 in 2010.

“This program has been such a great match for Furman,” says Furman Community Relations Director Chandra Dillard, who has led the annual campaign for seven years. “It’s about education, and it’s about providing support for the community.”

Each contributed package includes pencils, notebooks, folders, index cards, glue sticks and hand sanitizer.  School Tools helps more than 3,000 Greenville County students begin school ready to learn each year by providing school supplies and a backpack.
