Helping the refugees
Whenever Furman English professor Melinda Menzer has a problem to solve, she likes to swim as she’s working on an answer. On June 4, she took an issue all the way to the Tennessee River, where she swam 9.2 miles to raise money to aid refugees. Her swim was part of the Chattanooga Swim Fest, the 2017 U.S. Masters Swimming Middle and Ultramarathon Open Water National Championships. The Greenville News published a front-page story about Menzer’s efforts to raise awareness and money for HIAS, the international refugee agency of the American Jewish community.
