Rev. Kathryn (Kate) Taber, Facilitator for Peacemaking and Mission Partnerships of the Presbyterian Church (USA) World Mission in Jerusalem, has been named Associate University Chaplain at Furman. Taber will begin her duties at Furman July 31.

As Associate University Chaplain, Taber will work directly with Furman’s Vaughn CroweTipton, Associate Vice President for Spiritual Life and University Chaplain, as well as Furman’s campus ministers who represent nearly 25 active religious groups on campus.

Said CroweTipton, “This timely appointment will continue the Office of the Chaplains’ commitment and ongoing work in religious life and diversity, connect with the recent hiring of Furman’s first Chief Diversity Officer, and embrace even further the work toward implementing The Furman Advantage vision of a diverse and inclusive campus.”

Taber began her work in Israel in 2014 to rebuild the peacemaking ministry of the Presbyterian Church (USA) in Israel-Palestine through establishing relationships with local partners, fundraising, and creating peacemaking initiatives. Before joining Presbyterian World Mission, Taber was Resident Pastor at Central Presbyterian Church in Atlanta where she worked with young adults, oversaw the Issues and Advocacy program, provided crisis care and pastoral care, and served on the presbytery public policy committee.

She is a graduate of Coe College with a bachelor’s (magna cum laude) in Psychology. She holds an M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary, and she completed a unit of Clinical Pastoral Education at the Baptist Health System in San Antonio, Texas.

Taber, who grew up in Nebraska and Iowa, has authored a series of papers and articles on her work in Israel about issues of violence and faith. She and her husband, Nathan, who worked for the Carter Center in Israel and Palestine, have an infant daughter, Rosalie.
