U.S. must talk to North Korea

Furman Politics and International Affairs professor Akan Malici warns of dire consequences for the U.S. and the world if cooler heads don’t prevail with respect to North Korea. As guest columnist for The Greenville News, Malici says, “Today, instead of direct diplomacy, the talk is about preemptive strikes. The consequences would be impossible to contain. Even if [preemptive strikes] were to neutralize North Korea’s nuclear arsenal, they would not be able to destroy all its conventional weapons. This could trigger a second Korean war, with disastrous regional and global consequences that, of course, would not leave the U.S. unaffected.”
