NCAA men’s basketball tournament returning to Greenville in 2022
The NCAA announced today that Furman University and the Southern Conference will serve as co-hosts of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament first and second rounds at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, S.C., in 2022.
Additionally, the SoCon was awarded a Division I women’s basketball regional in 2020.
Bon Secours Wellness Arena will host the women’s regional March 27-30 in 2020 and will play host to the NCAA men’s tournament March 18 & 20, 2022.
Criteria for selecting the host sites included creating what will be an exceptional experience for the student-athletes, along with adherence to NCAA bid specifications. Specifications can include, but are not limited to, providing optimal facilities; ease of travel to the location and ample lodging; and adherence to NCAA principles, which include providing an atmosphere that is safe and respects the dignity of all attendees.
Furman and the Southern Conference served as co-hosts of the NCAA men’s tournament First/Second Round last month in front of capacity crowds at BSWA in downtown Greenville. Two of the participating teams, North Carolina and South Carolina, advanced to the Final Four, with the Tar Heels going on to win the national championship.
Furman and the Southern Conference also teamed up in 2002 to host the South Region first and second rounds in Greenville.
