Simplicity a State of Mind
In an essay for Sapiens, former Furman president David E. Shi writes about the virtues of simplicity, which “demands neither an end to economic growth nor a vow of personal poverty. A simpler life’s basic requirement is not a rural homestead or a monastic regimen, for simplicity is fundamentally a state of mind rather than a particular standard of living.” Shi, a 1973 Furman graduate and author of The Simple Life: Plain Living and High Thinking in America Culture, served as Furman’s president from 1994 to 2010. He is also a member of Furman’s history faculty.
