The Furman University Symphony Orchestra will present a concert Friday, Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium on campus.

The concert, “Vive la France!!” is a Sound Quality Concert Series event, and is part of Furman’s Cultural Life Program. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $5 for students.

Conducted by Furman Music Professor Dr. Thomas Joiner, the concert features the music of Berlioz, Haydn, Dukas, and Claude-Michel Schönberg.

Paying homage to Paris, the “City of Lights,” Dr. Joiner leads the FSO in selections which underscore the city’s important role in the arc of music history. Says Joiner, “Paris has a distinguished musical heritage reaching back to the medieval period. One of the earliest forms of polyphonic music in Western history is referred to as “Notre Dame Organum,” and Paris was the heart of the “Ars Nova” style of composition in the 1300s, which resulted in some of the most rhythmically complex music ever written until the twentieth century.”

The program includes “Roman Carnival Overture” by Berlioz; Symphony No. 82 in C Major, “The Bear,” by Haydn; “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” by Dukas; and selections from Les Misérables by Claude-Michel Schönberg.

Tickets may be ordered online. For more information about the concert, contact the Furman Music Office at (864) 294-2086, or email the department at FurmanMusic@furman.edu.
