Dalibor Rohac Speaks About “Brexit” Oct. 4

American Enterprise Institute (AEI) scholar Dr. Dalibor Rohac will speak about “Brexit” Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. in Hartness Pavilion (connected to Daniel Dining Hall) on the Furman University campus.

His talk, “Britain, the European Union, and the Future of the Western World” is free and open to the public and is made possible by the AEI Executive Council at Furman. The event is part of Furman’s Cultural Life Program.

In one of the most surprising political events in recent years, the United Kingdom voted during the summer in a public referendum to leave the European Union. A contentious issue in the region for some time, the action saw the UK become the first nation to withdraw from the 28-member group headquartered in Brussels.

In the wake of Brexit, the British pound has plummeted, unrest has prevailed among EU leaders, and the Obama administration has remained noticeably quiet about the issue.

Rohac will discuss Brexit—the consequences for the EU, its impact on the United States and the effect it will have on the future of the Western world. Furman political science professor Dr. Brent Nelson will moderate the event and lead a Q&A following Rohac’s remarks.

A native of Slovakia, Rohac has extensive experience covering European issues, and is a major advocate of reforming and improving the European Union despite starting his career as a critic and skeptic of the entire project. Rohac’s new book Towards an Imperfect Union describes his vision for a reinvigorated European Union in the decades ahead, and highlights the struggle in Brussels between free-market advocates who want to reform the EU and far-right populists who wish to see the EU dismantled.

Before joining the American Enterprise Institute, Rohac spent time at the Legatum Institute in London as well as the Center for European Reform in Brussels. He is a regular contributor to Foreign Policy magazine and U.S. News & World Report.

The American Enterprise Institute (AEI) is a nonpartisan think tank and research group in Washington, D.C., where Rohac is a research fellow and scholar studying European political and economic trends.
