Thomas Sounds Off on Meaning of S.C.’s Low ACT Scores

It’s a symptom of a deeper socioeconomic problem according to Furman education professor Paul Thomas–in South Carolina only 14 percent of ACT test-takers were ready for college, while a mere 2 percent of black students met standard on the four sections of the ACT. Says Thomas, “South Carolina has spent three decades changing standards, tests and accountability, but refuses to address directly the race and class inequities facing our state and those same inequities reflected in our schools.” Instead of focusing on outcomes, Thomas says South Carolina’s needs are more basic.
