French Citizen of the Month

||Book explores representations of migration in contemporary French cinema

Dr. Marianne Bessy, an associate professor of French in the Modern Languages and Literatures department at Furman, has been selected as the “Honored French Citizen” of the month by the French Consulate in Atlanta.

A native of Rennes, France, Bessy has taught at Furman since 2008.  A feature story on the French Consulate website says that Bessy “ensures that her students have an ample understanding of French culture, rather than simply knowledge of the language.”

Even though Bessy never planned to teach French, she soon learned she loved it.  “Teaching,” she says, “is a skill that must be cultivated, and I feel that I improve after each course I teach. There is never a moment of ‘arriving’ in my profession. I am always thinking about new projects that could work well.”
