A total of 24 freshmen joined the Furman University student body this fall as Townes and Hollingsworth scholars.

Both of the scholarships are among the most prestigious at the university.

Sixteen students received the John D. Hollingsworth Scholarship, while eight students were awarded the Charles H. Townes Scholarship.  Both provide $25,000 per year in scholarship aid with a $1,000 stipend to study abroad and a $1,500 summer internship or research stipend.

The Hollingsworth Scholarship, named for the late John D. Hollingsworth, Jr., a Greenville businessman, is available exclusively to South Carolina residents.

The Townes Scholarship is named for Charles H. Townes, the Furman alumnus and trustee emeritus who received the 1964 Nobel Prize in physics and the 2005 Templeton Prize.  Only out-of-state students are eligible for the scholarships.

Prospective students interested in applying for the Hollingsworth or Townes scholarships should visit the Furman website.  For more information, call the Furman Admissions office at (864) 294-2034.
