Furman University faculty members Anne Culberson and Mark Kilstofte have been awarded Fulbright Scholar research grants for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Culberson, a visiting lecturer in modern languages and literatures, and Kilstofte, professor of music, are among the approximately 1,100 U.S. faculty and professionals who will travel abroad through the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program during the upcoming academic year.

Culberson will attend the two-week Baden-Württemberg Seminar for American Faculty in German and German Studies. The seminar offers professional development in all areas relevant to the teaching of German Studies including German language, literature, culture, professional education, politics and higher education.

Kilstofte’s nine-month Fulbright Scholar grant will take him to Norway where he will be a research scholar at the University of Oslo’s Centre for Ibsen Studies. There he will compose a full-length opera based on Henrik Ibsen’s “Brand,” the story of a passionate, well-intentioned priest brought to ruin by his uncompromising beliefs.

Culberson, who joined the Furman faculty in 2005, teaches German and French.  Kilstofte teaches composition and music theory, and has been at Furman since 1992.

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.

Recipients of Fulbright grants are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields. The program operates in more than 155 countries worldwide.

Since its establishment in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the Fulbright Program has given approximately 310,000 students, scholars, teachers, artists, and scientists the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
