The conference, “The Gifts of Imperfection and Inclusion,” is sponsored by Furman’s Office of the Chaplains, NEXUS Center, the South Carolina Society for Clinical Social Work (SCSCSW), Town Magazine, the Greenville Journal, and the Greenville Hospital System.  The series of events is open to church members, laity, social workers, health-care professionals, ministers and other interested community members.

Speakers for the event are Brené Brown and Yvette Flunder.

Brown (www.brenebrown.com) is a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. Brown’s research on shame and empathy led her to develop a concept she calls “Wholeheartedness.” Her work has been featured on PBS, NPR, and CNN, and was the topic of her 2012 TED talk as well as two 2010 TEDx talks presented in Houston and Kansas City. TED is a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Now having a broader scope, TED began in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design.

Flunder is an acclaimed preacher, educator, conference speaker and singer who in 1991 founded the City of Refuge United Church of Christ, a thriving inner-city congregation in San Francisco uniting gospel and social ministries. She is an ordained minister of the UCC and a graduate of the ministry studies and master’s programs at the Pacific School of Religion, Berkeley, Calif. She received her doctorate from San Francisco Theological Seminary.
