Charter schools needs a thorough examination
There is a new report calling for South Carolina to increase the state’s investment in charter schools. But Furman education professor Paul Thomas says the state needs to consider such a move carefully. In an op-ed for The State newspaper, he writes that South Carolina should take a comprehensive look at how charter schools perform, notably when compared to traditional public schools. National studies, Thomas says, have shown that charter schools produce about the same measurable outcomes as public schools while demonstrating some disturbing consequences.
