Stanley speaks about picking a president in 2016
Harold Stanley, Ph.D., political science professor and Vice President of Academic Affairs at Southern Methodist University (Dallas) will speak on the campus of Furman University Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 5 p.m. in Watkins Room of the Trone Student Center.
His talk, “Picking a President in 2016: Lessons Learned (or not) from Previous Campaigns, Elections, and Their Aftermaths,” is free and open to the public, and is part of Furman’s Cultural Life Program. It is presented by the Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Program and the Furman Political Science Department.
Since 1956, the Phi Beta Kappa Society’s Visiting Scholar Program has been offering undergraduates the opportunity to spend time with some of America’s most distinguished scholars. The purpose of the program is to contribute to the intellectual life of the institution by making possible an exchange of ideas between the Visiting Scholars and the resident faculty and students.
The 13 men and women participating during 2015-2016 will visit 100 colleges and universities with chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, spending two days on each campus and taking full part in the academic life of the institution. They will meet informally with students and faculty members, participate in classroom discussions and seminars, and give a lecture open to the university/college community and the general public. Now in its 60th year, the Visiting Scholar Program has sent 636 Scholars on more than 5,000 two-day visits.
Dr. Stanley holds the Geurin-Pettus Distinguished Chair in American Politics and Political Economy at Southern Methodist University and has recently been named SMU’s Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost ad interim.
His research focuses on American government, particularly on Southern and Latino politics as well as presidential elections. He is the author of numerous books and articles, coedits Vital Statistics on American Politics, now in its 15th edition, and has testified often as an expert witness in federal court on voting rights and redistricting.
Stanley holds degrees from Yale University and Oxford University.
