Oregon State University’s Goodrich gives poetry reading

Charles Goodrich of the School of History, Philosophy, and Religion at Oregon State University will give a poetry reading Monday, Sept. 28, at 7:30 p.m., in Johns Hall 101 on the Furman University campus.

The event is free and open to the public and is part of Furman’s Cultural Life Program. The reading is sponsored by the Furman Department of English and the David E. Shi Center for Sustainability.

Goodrich has written three volumes of poems, A Scripture of Crows, Going to Seed: Dispatches from the Garden, and Insects of South Corvallis, as well as a collection of essays about nature, parenting, and building his own house, The Practice of Home.

To support his writing habit, Goodrich worked 25 years as a professional gardener—for a convent, a residential treatment facility for troubled teens, and for the historic Benton County Courthouse (Ore.).

He serves as director for the Spring Creek Project for Ideas, Nature, and the Written Word, an independently-funded program at Oregon State University. The Spring Creek Project seeks to bring together the practical wisdom of the environmental sciences, the clarity of philosophical analysis, and the creative, expressive power of the written word, to find new ways to understand and re-imagine our relation to the natural world.
