Paul Thomas writes op-ed about child well-being

Dr. Paul Thomas

Racially-motivated shootings in Charleston have trained a magnifying glass on the state of South Carolina. Furman education professor Paul Thomas, Ed.D., shifts the focus to lagging opportunity for many in the state when it comes to education and jobs. In an op-ed Dr. Thomas writes for The State, he cites stats from South Carolina’s 2015 Kids Count profile, which, he says, “reveals a particularly grim picture with the state ranking 42nd in the nation in terms of child well-being.” Thomas, who offers strategies for righting the ship, says the cause of the low ranking is pervasive state and national racism and economic inequity which “condemn our children’s destiny to their ZIP codes, not the content of their character.”
