Becoming informed and engaged citizens

Across a variety of disciplines, Furman’s faculty and staff ask the students to consider the fundamental question, “How Shall I Live?,” both in the classroom and throughout their extracurricular and service experiences. It is also a question we ask ourselves as members of a democracy, which thrives only with an informed and engaged citizenry. In an op-ed for The Greenville News, Furman President Elizabeth Davis writes about an upcoming four-week series at Furman, “Crime and Punishment: Thinking Outside the Cell,” that gives all of us an opportunity to examine questions about our system of justice and deepen our understanding of its complexities.
