2014 Fall High Noon Schedule

Dr. Paul Thomas

Dr. Paul Thomas

Furman University education professor Paul Thomas will examine the controversial Common Core educational initiative when he kicks off the university’s High Noon fall lecture series Wednesday, Sept. 24 at the Upcountry History Museum-Furman.

The lecture, “Why Everyone (Almost) Is Wrong about Common Core,” begins at noon.  It is free and open to the public.

Thomas’ talk will be the first of eight consecutive lectures presented by Furman professors during the fall, which will touch on topics such as politics, business, history and economics. All lectures are free and begin at noon on Wednesdays.

Common Core is a national standards initiative in the U.S. that details what K-12 students should know, especially in the areas of math and English, in each grade in preparation for college and the workforce. Common Core has created a great deal of debate, and Thomas will discuss the misconceptions about Common Core and what educators should be doing instead.

The Upcountry History Museum/Furman is located at 540 Buncombe Street in downtown Greenville’s Heritage Green area.

A complete schedule of lectures is available on Furman’s website.
