Kudos for the Furman Golf Course

golf-courseThe Furman University Golf Club is ranked 18th among the nation’s top 30 college golf courses, according to the most recent rankings in Golfweek magazine. The national golf publication moved the Furman course up 11 spots from its ranking of 29th in 2013.

Measuring nearly 7,000 yards from the championship tees, the Furman course was built in the late 1950s and underwent a major renovation in 2008 under the direction of architect Kris Spence.  The par-72 layout has served as the home course for such outstanding Furman golf alumni as Betsy King, Beth Daniel, Dottie Pepper and Brad Faxon.

“The Furman Golf Course is a wonderful layout with traditional design features,” said Kelley Hester, head coach of the Lady Paladin golf team.  “While it is challenging tee to green, the real test comes once the player reaches the undulating greens.  We are really blessed to have such a great course right here on the Furman campus.”

In 2008, all 18 greens were reconstructed under USGA specifications and reseeded with Champion UltraDwarf Bermudagrass.  A long-term master plan was implemented in 2010 by Scot Sherman, associate director of Facilities Services at Furman and a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects.

The enhancements include a new practice facility for the Furman golf teams, improved public practice facilities, new tees to accommodate golfers of all levels, refurbished cart paths, irrigation upgrades, major drainage installation and clubhouse enhancements. The course now also qualifies as a PGA Family Course.
