Furman to open 2014 campaign at UGa

coachingFurman will be looking to build on a solid 2013-14 season when it opens the fall 15s campaign September 6 in a round-robin at the University of Georgia.

The Paladins, who finished 3rd in the 12-team Southern Rugby Conference in both 15s and 7s last year, will visit Division I Georgia and Georgia Tech September 6 during a round-robin scrimmage.

Furman, a Division II program, will return 13 of 15 starters and a talented recruiting class that includes players from New York, England, Ohio, New Jersey and Indiana. Too, a handful of new players who joined the team in the spring and showed great promise will return.

“We normally open the season with a Division II team. But with our returning experience and growing depth, we will be able to manage playing up this year,” said Coach John Roberts. “It is always good to take an away trip your first game. It really helps folds your newer players into the program.”

The Paladins last played Georgia in 2008, a loss, and Georgia Tech in 2012, a win.

League play launches September 20 as Furman travels to face the their longtime rival, The Citadel. The squad’s home opener is September 27 against the College of Charleston. In other league games, Furman plays at Lander (October 4), hosts UNC-Wilmington (October 18) and travels to Coastal Carolina (November 1).

On October 25, Homecoming, the team will host the Furman Rugby Olde Guys (FROGs) in annual alumni game.
