Michael Anthony (left) and Coach Daryrell KnowltonMichael Anthony, a two-year team captain and Indiana select side player, has accepted a Furman rugby scholarship and will join the Paladins this fall.

Anthony, 5’10, 170 pounds, is a senior on the powerful Culver Military Academy rugby team. The team was a state semi-finalist in 2013 and finished runner up in 2012. Anthony, who attended the Furman Rugby Camp in 2012, plays scrum-half.

“Michael is very athletic, quick and as a former wrestler has a fantastic sense of balance,” says Furman head coach John Roberts. “He is one of top 9s in the Midwest, a natural leader and we are looking forward to having him at Furman.”

Anthony has started all four years for CMA and is from Wakarusa, Indiana. He is the son of Deb and Kevin Anthony.

“Throughout the last four years I have fallen in love with the competitive and physically demanding sport of rugby,” says Anthony. “I know that the Furman rugby team will become a national force to be dealt with, and I am excited to join in on the Furman rugby’s pursuit of excellence with my future teammates.”

Anthony joins Culver alumni Turner Morsches, a junior,  and Lucas Ward, a sophomore,  on the Furman team.

“His physical tenacity is infectious and he is always leading from the front foot,” said CMA head coach Darrell Knowlton. “Mike’s integrity and intelligence, on and off the pitch has set the standard of what it is to be a Culver Military Academy Rugby player.  He will be missed greatly, but knowing that he gets to continue at a great institution like Furman, where he will join fellow CMA rugby alumni is reassuring.”
