Pi Kappa Phi wins Award of Distinction

The Delta Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity at Furman University has received the 2014 Chapter Award of Distinction from the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC).

The award was presented to fraternity members at the NIC annual meeting earlier this month in Atlanta, Ga.

The Chapter Award of Distinction recognizes the undergraduate chapter which is highly functioning, seeks to educate others about the benefits of a values based fraternity experience, and works to maintain a healthy relationship with their inter/national organization.

According to NIC officials, the Furman chapter demonstrated a “commitment to academic excellence, community service and philanthropic giving” and is an “example of what a fraternity should be in the 21st century.”

Mark Timmes, chief executive officer of the national Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, said Furman’s chapter “has a role in elevating the other chapters on campus by helping to revise the Furman recruitment process. These men have found ways to continue reminding initiated members of the values learned in our ritual while at the same time teaching the new members those important lessons as well.”

Founded in 1909, the North-American Interfraternity Conference is the trade association representing 74 international and national men’s fraternities.  Through advocacy, collaboration, and education the NIC works to ensure that fraternities can operate in an environment conducive to their success.
