Merkt named President of SACUBO

MerktsmallFurman University Vice President of Finance and Administration Mary Lou Merkt has been named President of the Southern Association of College and University Business Officers (SACUBO).

SACUBO, first organized in 1928, is an independent professional development and service organization assisting institutions of higher education in a 14-state region. SACUBO is one of four regional associations that comprise the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO), which includes more than 2,000 member colleges and universities. Merkt also serves as a member of the Executive Governance Committee and Secretary of the Board for NACUBO.

Merkt came to Furman in 2003 from Sweet Briar College in Virginia, where she served as Vice President for Finance and Administration. She began her career in higher education at her alma mater, Radford University (Va.), serving as Director of Internal Audit, Director of Financial Services, and later, Assistant Vice President for Finance.

As Furman University’s Chief Financial and Administrative Officer, Merkt oversees all financial planning and execution; buildings and grounds; auxiliary services; information technology and human resources. Merkt is a certified public accountant and holds both a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a master’s in business administration.
