Charlie Hough, a Furman University freshman from Travelers Rest, has won back-to-back road races for the Furman Cycling team in an unprecedented accomplishment among freshmen in the Southeastern Collegiate Cycling Conference (SECCC).

In a March 15 race hosted by Clemson University, Hough prevailed on the most difficult race course of the season. The 60-mile event featured three summits of Sassafras Mountain and three crossings of the continental divide. Hough made conference history by repeating the feat March 22 at Western Carolina University. In both events, Hough outpaced more than 100 cyclists.

Said SECCC Director Joseph Middleton, “Charlie is a very talented kid with a massive motor, and is extremely fun to watch. We are looking forward to Charlie battling it out with our other elite guys over the next four years.”

The SECCC is chartered by USA Cycling, the sport’s Olympic governing body, and is comprised of 40 schools including Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Auburn, and Clemson, as well as competitive varsity teams from Brevard, King, Lees McRae, Milligan, and Mars Hill.

Furman Cycling Head Coach Rusty Miller said, “We are lucky to build our team around a student-athlete as talented and ambitious as Charlie. The young man has a hunger for the finish line that I’ve seldom seen in my coaching career.”

Hough and his teammates will compete in an event at Milligan College April 5, the conference championships at University of Central Florida April 12, and the Collegiate National Championships in Richmond, Va. May 3-4.
