Percussion Ensemble to present “Inuksuit” March 29

The Furman Percussion Ensemble will present a performance Saturday, March 29 at 4 p.m. in the Furman Amphitheater.

“Inuksuit” by John Luther Adams, is free and open to the public and is presented by the Music Department as part of the Earth Day Festival taking place throughout the day on campus.

The student-led performance features 15 ensemble members and two alumni guests.

Music critic Alex Ross of The New Yorker said of the performance, “… one of the most rapturous experiences of my listening life.”

Adams’ groundbreaking work, scored for anywhere between nine and 99 percussionists, was co-commissioned by Furman and premiered in 2009 at the Banff Center for the Arts in Alberta, Canada. The U.S. premiere of the piece took place at Furman in 2010.

An Alaskan composer, Adams is known for his attempts to marry music to landscape or some other aspect of nature. The concert-length work takes its title from the stone monoliths that the Inuit use to orient themselves in the Arctic region.
