On a frigid night in Paladin Stadium, Furman put together a fine second half in defeating Division I UNC 29-20 January 24.

Captain Turner Morches, Pearson Fowler, Rusty Johnson and Eric Dolan found the tryzone for the Paladins. The larger UNC team scored first to stake a 5-0 lead. Jacob Milchuck added two penalty kicks for the Paladins to give Furman a 6-5 lead.

The teams traded scores throughout most the game with the contest in doubt until Fowler and Johnson scored quick back-to-back trys near the 75 minute mark to put Furman ahead 29-15. UNC muscled in a try on the game’s final play to cut the Paladin lead to nine.

On Feb. 1 the team played an informal friendly game against Greenville’s B-side at Roberts Field. Eleven members of Paladin squad suited out in the non-mandatory game. Coach Roberts, Greg Dover ’05 and a two Greenville reserves filled out the Paladin side. Furman scored early and often in building 30-10 halftime lead.

The larger Griffins team rebounded in the second half but the Purple team prevailed 50-25 in the friendly affair.
