Paisley Currah, political science professor at Brooklyn College (City University of New York), will speak on campus Monday, March 18 at 3 p.m. in McEachern Room of Furman Hall.

His talk, “Sex is as Sex Does,” is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by Furman’s Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies and the Humanities Development Fund. The event is part of Furman’s Cultural Life Program.

Currah is a prominent academic at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, and executive director of its Lesbian and Gay Studies Center. In his current research, Currah looks at how states classify sex, focusing on the contradictions in definitions of sex (as in male and female) from jurisdiction to jurisdiction and agency to agency. He has also written widely on the transgender rights movement in the United States. His teaching interests include sexuality and gender studies, queer legal theory, public policy, constitutional law, and political theory, including contemporary political thought, biopolitics and surveillance studies.

With Monica J. Casper, Currah has written Corpus: An Interdisciplinary Reader on Bodies and Knowledge. His latest book project is The United States of Gender: Legislating, Litigating, and Regulating (Trans)Gender Identities to be published by NYU Press.
