Brown-Nagin book receives another award

The new book by 1992 Furman graduate Tomiko Brown-Nagin, Courage to Dissent: Atlanta and the Long History of the Civil Rights Movement, has received the 2012 Liberty Legacy Foundation Award from the Organization of American Historians.  The award is given annually for the best book by a historian on the civil rights struggle.

Brown-Nagin, who graduated from Furman with a degree in history, was also awarded the 2012 Bancroft Prize by Columbia University in recognition of her book.

A leading expert on legal history, constitutional law and civil rights, Brown-Nagin currently teaches law and history at the University of Virginia.  She will join the Harvard Law School faculty this summer as a tenured Professor of Law , and will also serve as an affiliate of the History Department in Harvard ’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences.  She holds a doctorate in history from Duke University and a law degree from Yale Law School, where she served as an editor of the Yale Law Journal.
