Mock trial team kicks off 2011-12 season

Furman’s mock trial team kicked off the 2011-2012 season the weekend of Oct. 14-16 with the Carolina Classic, which was hosted by Elon University in North Carolina.  Furman finished eighth in the 24-team field, which featured highly-touted programs from the Northeast, Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and South.

The team won and lost ballots against the University of Cincinnati, won and tied against the University of Central Florida, lost both ballots to the University of Virginia, and won both ballots over Washington and Lee University.   Cincinnati finished in 5th place and Virginia claimed second.

The team members are:

Alyssa Richardson ’12 of Columbia, S.C.

Caley DeGroote ’14, Lyman, S.C.

Ricky Davis ’14, Kennesaw, Ga.

Dustin Magainzer ’15, Cherry Hill, N.J.

Mara Hershberger ’15, Martinsburg, Pa.

Chandler Jackson ’15, Summerville, S.C.

Judy Gantzer ’15, Mumbai, India

Richardson was named an outstanding attorney, and Davis an outstanding witness.

The teams are coached by D. Brad Rustin ’03, Steven Buckingham ’03, Lindsay Builder ’07, Mark Fessler ’05, M. Mitchell Goldsmith ’06, Wes Carson ’08, Brent Tucker, and Thomas Azar.

The team’s next tournament is Oct. 29-30-the Sanders Invitational, Lexington, KY, hosted by Eastern Kentucky University.  We will take two teams to this tournament.  If you are in the Lexington area that weekend and wish to watch the teams, please contact me, and I’ll provide more information.
