{"id":468,"date":"2022-10-18T13:14:06","date_gmt":"2022-10-18T13:14:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/institute-advancement-community-health\/?page_id=468"},"modified":"2025-05-07T16:08:44","modified_gmt":"2025-05-07T16:08:44","slug":"upstate-medical-legal-partnership","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/institute-advancement-community-health\/upstate-medical-legal-partnership\/","title":{"rendered":"Upstate Medical Legal Partnership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Medical Legal Partnership (MLP) formally connects Furman University, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghs.org\/\">Prisma Health Upstate,<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sclegal.org\/\">South Carolina Legal Services<\/a> in work to improve health outcomes for people throughout the Upstate, especially those living in poverty.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"OYPEnA font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">By leveraging the expertise of each partner, our team works to identify and address health harming civil legal barriers before they worsen a patient&#8217;s condition. This innovative program is firmly committed to achieving health equity and justice for vulnerable pediatric and geriatric populations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The partnership\u2014started in 2016 and the first of its kind in South Carolina\u2014coordinates and streamlines access to non-medical assistance when a medical problem has roots in or is made worse by a social or legal problem.\u00a0 Currently, the South Carolina MLP is the only one in the country\u2014and there are nearly 300 of them, in 41 states\u2014in which the educational institution involved is a liberal arts, undergraduate institution.
