{"id":4,"date":"2024-08-05T17:49:42","date_gmt":"2024-08-05T17:49:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/hazing-prevention\/?page_id=4"},"modified":"2025-12-19T16:30:17","modified_gmt":"2025-12-19T16:30:17","slug":"home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/hazing-prevention\/","title":{"rendered":"Hazing Prevention"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>What is Hazing?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">While being part of a student organization or other campus group can be one of the most meaningful aspects of your Furman experience, hazing is a serious, and often hidden, problem that undermines that value of these experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Furman University defines hazing as an action taken toward a student or subset of students by an organization or its members that is not universally applied to all members of that organization. The only exceptions to the requirement of universal application are University approved educational plans for new members, sanctions or other disciplinary measures assigned as a result of an organization\u2019s internal disciplinary process, and University, athletic, and military training approved by Furman employees.<\/p>\n<p>Hazing includes but is not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Personal service to members of the organization or their designees;<\/li>\n<li>Physical abuse such as paddling, striking, branding, electric shock or bodily contact with harmful substances;<\/li>\n<li>Intimidation by threats of physical or other abuse;<\/li>\n<li>Excessive exercise or other tasks intended to cause physical exhaustion;<\/li>\n<li>Prolonged or repetitive tasks that result in sleep deprivation;<\/li>\n<li>Prolonged or harmful exposure to the elements;<\/li>\n<li>Humiliation through verbal or physical actions;<\/li>\n<li>Compelled consumption of any amount of alcohol;<\/li>\n<li>Compelled consumption of food or liquids;<\/li>\n<li>Grooming or dressing requirements; and<\/li>\n<li>Any task that requires the participant to violate the law or University policies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Learn more about <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.furman.edu\/content.php?catoid=29&amp;navoid=1665#hazing_policy\">Furman\u2019s Hazing Policy.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is Hazing?
