South Carolina as well as the nation, is facing a teacher shortage, and through this program, we will bring new people into the profession.

Dr. Troy Terry: The Master of Arts in Teaching program is specifically designed for folks who already have a degree and see themselves as a content specialist. The reason they probably majored in that subject is they have a natural affinity or love for the subject, whether it’s for biology or math or Spanish and typically, that was probably inspired by a teacher who really made them love that subject. Those folks you’ve always thought about teaching but never really considered it, are looking back and thinking, ‘Okay, at this point in my life this is what I’m going to do’ and the MAT is really going to give them the tools to go back and emulate that experience that they had and share that love of their content area in a new high school classroom.

Dr. Mike Svec: One of the strengths of the program is the relationship that will be formed between the professors and the students and all good teaching begins with the student teacher relationship.

Dr. Troy Terry: One of the most exciting things about the Master of Arts in Teaching information, is that it’s field based, and so it’s truly engaged learning. Students will be observing master teachers in their own classrooms working with students from the very beginning, and it’s a three semester program. From start to finish, in 12 months from observing someone else’s classroom to being a teacher of record in their own classroom.

Dr. Mike Svec: This program will serve those who had decided and chosen and now understand what their destiny is and that destiny is a classroom.

Want to begin your journey towards becoming a teacher?

Apply Today!

From the Transcript: Dr. Mike Svec: What Inspires me about the Furman MAT program is that it is addressing a pressing need.
